Quick answer

Good preparation means clearer images and fewer repeat visits. In short: confirm; ask; explain, then complete the remaining steps below.

Step by step

  1. Confirm the patient’s identity with two identifiers and review the order.

  2. Ask whether the patient followed fasting instructions, usually six to eight hours.

  3. Explain what the exam involves and how long it will take.

  4. Position the patient supine with the abdomen exposed and the rest covered.

  5. Warm the gel and apply it to the area to be scanned.

  6. Start with the organ most affected by bowel gas, often the gallbladder and pancreas.
