Finishing seams is a skill that improves with every wall.
Quick answer
Finishing seams is a skill that improves with every wall. In short: fill; apply; embed, then complete the remaining steps below.
Step by step
Fill any large gaps with setting-type compound and let it harden.
Apply a thin layer of compound over the seam with a 6-inch knife.
Embed paper tape into the compound and wipe out excess mud.
After drying, apply a second, wider coat with a 10-inch knife.
Apply a final coat with a 12-inch knife, feathering the edges.
Sand lightly with fine sandpaper or a sanding sponge and check with a light.
