Quick answer

Accurate pH readings start with proper calibration, usually at the start of each day. In short: check; rinse; place, then complete the remaining steps below.

Step by step

  1. Check that buffer solutions are fresh and within their expiration dates.

  2. Rinse the probe with distilled water and gently blot dry.

  3. Place the probe in pH 7 buffer and calibrate when the reading stabilizes.

  4. Rinse, then calibrate with pH 4 and/or pH 10 buffers as required.

  5. Check the slope or efficiency value against manufacturer specifications.

  6. Record calibration results in the field log.
