Quick answer

Releasing traffic must be coordinated with the flagger at the other end. In short: confirm; turn; lower, then complete the remaining steps below.

Step by step

  1. Confirm by radio that the other flagger has stopped opposing traffic.

  2. Turn the paddle to SLOW.

  3. Lower your free arm and motion traffic forward with a sweeping gesture.

  4. Watch vehicles as they move past the crew and equipment.

  5. Tell the other flagger when the last vehicle passes.

  6. Return to STOP when directed.

Safety reminders for flaggers

  • Wear high-visibility apparel and a hard hat at all times
  • Never stand in an open lane of traffic
  • Always have an escape route planned
  • Stay off your phone and alert to approaching vehicles
