How to Perform a Portable X-Ray in the ICU
Portable exams bring imaging to patients who are too sick to travel, and they require extra coordination.
Portable exams bring imaging to patients who are too sick to travel, and they require extra coordination. In short: coordinate; clean; raise, then complete the remaining steps below.
Step by step
Coordinate with the nurse about lines, tubes and the best time for the exam.
Clean the portable unit and image receptor before entering the room.
Raise the head of the bed if allowed and place the receptor behind the patient with help.
Position the tube at the correct distance and angle and collimate.
Announce “X-ray” so staff can step away, then take the exposure.
Remove the receptor carefully without dislodging lines, and clean equipment again.
Safety reminders for radiologic technologists
