Quick answer

Nebulized bronchodilators are among the most common respiratory treatments. In short: verify; assess; add, then complete the remaining steps below.

Step by step

  1. Verify the order, the patient’s identity and any allergies.

  2. Assess breath sounds, heart rate, respiratory rate and SpO2 before treatment.

  3. Add the prescribed medication to the nebulizer cup and connect to the gas source.

  4. Have the patient sit upright and breathe slowly through the mouthpiece or mask.

  5. Monitor heart rate and response during the treatment.

  6. Reassess breath sounds and vitals afterward and document the results.

Safety reminders for respiratory therapists

  • Wear PPE, including N95 respirators, for airborne infections
  • Follow oxygen fire safety: no open flames or sparks
  • Check alarms and backup equipment on every ventilator
