Quick answer

Every load must be monitored and documented to prove it was sterilized. In short: run; load; include, then complete the remaining steps below.

Step by step

  1. Run the daily Bowie-Dick test first if your sterilizer requires it.

  2. Load items so steam can circulate, with no packs touching the chamber walls.

  3. Include a biological indicator according to policy, such as in every load with implants.

  4. Select the correct cycle for the items and start the sterilizer.

  5. Review the printout or display for correct time, temperature and pressure.

  6. Record the load contents and results, and quarantine implants until the BI result is known.

Safety reminders for sterile processing technicians

  • Wear full PPE in decontamination
  • Handle sharps and heavy trays carefully
