Quick answer

Backwashing cleans filter media so it can keep removing particles effectively. Follow your plant’s procedure. In short: check; take; drain, then complete the remaining steps below.

Step by step

  1. Check filter indicators (headloss, turbidity breakthrough or run time) to confirm backwash is needed.

  2. Take the filter out of service by closing the influent and effluent valves.

  3. Drain the water level down to the specified point.

  4. Start surface wash or air scour if equipped.

  5. Open the backwash valve and gradually increase flow to the target rate.

  6. Backwash until the wash water runs clear, then stop and allow media to settle.

  7. Filter-to-waste if required, then return the filter to service and record the event.
