Updated By the Career Education Institute Curriculum Team
Quick answer

Concrete cracks. Joints decide where. In short: plan; tool; cut, then complete the remaining steps below.

Step by step

  1. Plan joint spacing; a common rule is two to three times the slab thickness in feet.

  2. Tool joints in fresh concrete with a groover, or saw-cut once it can support the saw.

  3. Cut to about one quarter of the slab depth.

  4. Use early-entry saws or cut as soon as the surface won’t ravel.

  5. Keep panels roughly square.

Safety reminders for concrete finishers

  • Wear waterproof boots, gloves and long sleeves to prevent concrete burns
  • Wash wet concrete off skin immediately
  • Control silica dust when saw-cutting and grinding
  • Stay clear of chutes, pumps and backing trucks
