Quick answer

IV access lets paramedics give fluids and medications quickly. In short: explain; apply; clean, then complete the remaining steps below.

Step by step

  1. Explain the procedure and gather supplies: catheter, tourniquet, prep, tape and fluids.

  2. Apply the tourniquet and look for a straight, healthy vein, often in the forearm or antecubital area.

  3. Clean the site and anchor the vein below the insertion point.

  4. Insert the catheter bevel up at a low angle until you see flashback.

  5. Advance the catheter, remove the needle into a sharps container and connect the line.

  6. Secure the IV, check flow and watch for swelling.

Safety reminders for paramedics

  • Assess scene safety before approaching any patient
  • Wear PPE and follow infection control on every call
  • Use proper lifting techniques and lifting equipment
  • Wear seat belts in the patient compartment whenever possible
