Quick answer
A cracked or clogged P-trap is one of the most common service calls. In short: place; loosen; clean, then complete the remaining steps below.
Step by step
Place a bucket under the trap and wear gloves.
Loosen the slip nuts on both ends of the trap and remove it.
Clean or inspect the tailpiece and trap arm for damage.
Fit the new trap with slip nuts and washers oriented correctly (beveled side toward the joint).
Align the trap and hand-tighten the slip nuts, then snug them slightly.
Run water and check every joint for leaks.
