How to Install Architectural Shingles
Correct layout and nailing are what make a shingle roof last and keep its warranty.
Correct layout and nailing are what make a shingle roof last and keep its warranty. In short: install; snap; install, then complete the remaining steps below.
Step by step
Install drip edge, underlayment and ice and water shield where required.
Snap chalk lines for the starter course and every few courses for alignment.
Install the starter strip along the eave with a slight overhang.
Lay the first course and nail in the manufacturer’s nailing zone, usually four to six nails per shingle.
Offset each course as directed so seams don’t line up.
Work up the roof, weaving or cutting valleys as specified.
Finish with ridge vent and ridge cap shingles.

- Use fall protection whenever you work on a roof or near an edge
- Keep ladders secured, extended three feet above the landing and set at the right angle
