Quick answer

Falls are the leading cause of death in roofing. A properly set up system protects you every minute you’re on the roof. In short: inspect; install; attach, then complete the remaining steps below.

Step by step

  1. Inspect your harness, lanyard, rope grab and lifeline for wear before use.

  2. Install a roof anchor rated for fall arrest near the ridge, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

  3. Attach the lifeline to the anchor and the rope grab to the lifeline.

  4. Put on the harness and adjust leg and chest straps snugly with the D-ring between your shoulder blades.

  5. Connect to the rope grab before you leave the ladder or safe area.

  6. Keep slack to a minimum and reposition the anchor as work moves.

Safety reminders for roofers

  • Use fall protection whenever you work on a roof or near an edge
  • Keep ladders secured, extended three feet above the landing and set at the right angle
  • Stay hydrated and take breaks in hot weather
  • Watch for overhead power lines when moving ladders and materials
