Forklift Operator how-to
How to Pick Up and Stack a Pallet
Most forklift accidents happen during load handling. Slow, deliberate movements prevent them.
Most forklift accidents happen during load handling. Slow, deliberate movements prevent them. In short: confirm; approach; drive, then complete the remaining steps below.
Step by step
Confirm the load is within the forklift’s rated capacity at that load center.
Approach squarely and stop with the forks level at the pallet opening height.
Drive forward slowly until the load rests against the backrest.
Lift slightly, tilt back to stabilize and check behind before reversing.
Travel with the load low (about 4–6 inches) and tilted back.
At the rack, stop, raise the load to the correct height, move forward and level the forks.
Lower the load onto the rack, back out slowly and lower forks before traveling.
Safety reminders for forklift operators
