Quick answer

Accurate trenching saves time and material. Never begin without utility locates. In short: confirm; position; dig, then complete the remaining steps below.

Step by step

  1. Confirm utility locate marks and the trench plan, and identify spoil placement at least two feet from the edge.

  2. Position the excavator square to the trench line on stable ground.

  3. Dig in smooth passes, keeping the bucket level as you approach grade.

  4. Check depth often with a grade rod, laser or GPS machine control.

  5. Place spoil away from the trench edge to avoid cave-ins.

  6. Install a trench box or other protective system before anyone enters a trench five feet or deeper.

  7. Clean the trench bottom to final grade.
