How to Set Up a MIG Welder
Proper setup prevents most MIG problems. Always check the machine’s manual.
Proper setup prevents most MIG problems. Always check the machine’s manual. In short: inspect; install; match, then complete the remaining steps below.
Step by step
Inspect cables, the gun, the ground clamp and the gas hose for damage.
Install the correct wire type and diameter and set drive roll tension.
Match the contact tip size to the wire and install the nozzle.
Connect shielding gas (commonly 75% argon/25% CO2 for mild steel) and set flow to roughly 20–30 cubic feet per hour.
Set polarity to DCEP for solid wire.
Use the machine’s chart to set voltage and wire feed speed for the metal thickness.
Clamp the ground to clean bare metal and run a test bead on scrap, adjusting as needed.
Safety reminders for welders
- Wear a properly shaded welding helmet, flame-resistant clothing and gloves
- Use ventilation or fume extraction, especially for stainless and galvanized steel
- Follow hot work permits and keep a fire watch where required
- Secure gas cylinders upright and away from heat
