Quick answer

Working to a string line keeps walls level and straight. In short: build; attach; spread, then complete the remaining steps below.

Step by step

  1. Build leads at each corner and check them for level, plumb and height.

  2. Attach line blocks to the leads and stretch the string tight at the top of the course.

  3. Spread a bed of mortar and furrow it lightly with the trowel.

  4. Butter the head joint of each brick and press it into place.

  5. Tap the brick down to the line and flush with the face.

  6. Cut off excess mortar and check level often.
