Quick answer

Most dispensing errors come from rushing. A consistent routine protects patients. In short: confirm; pull; count, then complete the remaining steps below.

Step by step

  1. Confirm the prescription data entry matches the original order: patient, drug, strength, dosage form, quantity and directions.

  2. Pull the stock bottle and scan its barcode against the label: check the NDC.

  3. Count tablets in fives on a clean counting tray, using a spatula, or use an automated counter.

  4. Pour into the correct size vial, cap with the right closure and attach the label.

  5. Place the stock bottle, filled vial and paperwork together for pharmacist verification.

  6. Clean the tray, especially after allergenic drugs such as penicillins or sulfa drugs.

Safety reminders for pharmacy technicians

  • Verify every product by barcode or NDC before it reaches the pharmacist
  • Use gloves and proper ventilation when handling hazardous drugs such as chemotherapy agents (USP <800>)
  • Follow DEA rules for receiving, storing and counting controlled substances
  • Report errors and near-misses: they help prevent future harm
