Quick answer

Backing is the skill new drivers worry about most. Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast. In short: get; set; use, then complete the remaining steps below.

Step by step

  1. Get out and look (GOAL) at the dock, obstacles and clearances.

  2. Set up your position, pulling forward to give yourself the best angle.

  3. Use your mirrors and turn your steering wheel opposite the direction you want the trailer to go.

  4. Back slowly, making small corrections.

  5. Stop and get out to check whenever you’re unsure.

  6. Straighten the tractor and trailer as you approach the dock.

  7. Set the brakes and chock the wheels as required by the facility.
