Quick answer

A thorough pre-trip inspection is required by law and is a big part of the CDL skills test. In short: check; inspect; walk, then complete the remaining steps below.

Step by step

  1. Check the engine compartment: fluid levels, belts, hoses and leaks.

  2. Inspect the cab: gauges, mirrors, wipers, horn, emergency equipment and seat belt.

  3. Walk around the tractor: lights, tires (tread depth and inflation), wheels, lug nuts and suspension.

  4. Inspect brakes: chambers, hoses, slack adjusters and pushrods; perform the air brake check.

  5. Check the coupling system: fifth wheel, locking jaws, kingpin, air and electrical lines.

  6. Walk the trailer: lights, tires, doors, landing gear and cargo securement.

  7. Document defects on the DVIR and don’t drive with out-of-service defects.
