What is a typical day like for a real estate agent?

Check new listings on the MLS and follow up with three buyer leads. From there, the day usually includes prospect for buyers and sellers and build a referral network, prepare comparative market analyses to price homes, and list and market properties online and in person. Flexible but irregular. Many showings and calls happen evenings and weekends. Many agents are independent contractors who set their own hours.

Hour by hour: a typical shift

No two days are identical, but this timeline reflects a realistic day for a real estate agent working full time.

  2. Prepare a comparative market analysis for a listing appointment.
  3. Meet sellers, walk the home and present pricing and marketing plans.
  4. Show four homes to first-time buyers after reviewing their buyer agreement and pre-approval.
  5. Write an offer, review contingencies with the buyers and send it to the listing agent.
  6. Negotiate a counteroffer by phone and update the transaction timeline.
